Don’t Hit It: A Quick Guide to Managing Technology Frustration

Don’t Hit It: A Quick Guide to Managing Technology Frustration

We’ve all been there: a deadline is looming, you’re in the flow, and suddenly your screen freezes, the Internet drops, or your printer decides it’s retired. It’s more than just a minor inconvenience; technology friction can derail your entire day and send your stress levels through the roof.

While we’re always here to jump in and save the day, how you handle those first few minutes of a tech glitch can make a massive difference in your downtime. Here are four tips for overcoming technology frustration and getting back on track.

The Golden Rule of IT: Restart Everything

It sounds like a cliché, but have you tried turning it off and on again?

It is always the first thing we ask.

Modern devices manage complex layers of background processes. Over time, these can clog your system’s memory. A full restart clears the RAM and resets the hardware's initial state.

Don't just close the laptop lid. Perform a full shut down or restart to ensure the system actually refreshes.

Take a Strategic 60

When technology refuses to cooperate, our physiological response is often fight or flight. Your heart rate rises, and your problem-solving skills actually decrease.

Before you click the mouse for the 50th time or contemplate percussive maintenance, just walk away for 60 seconds. Grab a glass of water or stretch. Returning with a lowered cortisol level allows you to describe the problem more clearly to support teams, which leads to a faster resolution.

Check the Radius of the Problem

Is the issue just you, or is the world on fire? Identifying the scope of the problem helps manage expectations and determines your next move.

Is it the app? Check if other websites load.
Is it the internet? Check if your phone (off Wi-Fi) can access the site.
Is it a known outage? Use sites like DownDetector or check our internal status page.

If it’s a global outage for a service like Microsoft 365, no amount of troubleshooting on your end will fix it. Knowing this allows you to pivot to a different task immediately rather than wasting an hour fighting the inevitable.

Create a Low-Tech Backup Plan

Downtime is only dead time if you don't have a plan. Frustration usually stems from the feeling of being trapped.

Keep a small list of Analog Tasks—things you can do without that specific piece of tech. This might include:

  • Brainstorming on a physical notepad.
  • Making phone calls instead of video meetings.
  • Reviewing printed documents or physical files.
